Lightning In A Bottle

When I was a kid, (it seems most of these posts start with that phrase. I need a different opening. Perhaps, when I was a wee lad or maybe back when I was knee high to a grasshopper. Better still, Once Upon A Time. I don’t think anyone has used that one.) Okay, Once upon a time…when I was a kid(*sigh* old habits die hard), nothing was more joyful than summertime. Endless days to do whatever you wanted and time enough to forget all that useless stuff we learned in school.

For me, there were several key markers which served as the official start of Summer. Alice Coopers, “School’s Out” blaring on the radio was the favorite when I was in Junior High, but when I was a wee lad(hah! I got it that time), nothing signaled the summer season like catching lightning bugs at sunset. Sure the scientific explanation for those glowing fireflies would be: Bioluminescence is the production and emission of light by a living organism. Its name is a hybrid word, originating from the Greek bios for “living” and the Latinlumen “light”. Bioluminescence is a naturally occurring form of chemiluminescence where energy is released by a chemical reaction in the form of light emission.

But, when I was eight, it was sheer magic. We would run around the yard and cup our hands gently capturing the glowing insects and sometimes we would place a few in a jar thus creating a sort of living lantern. Quite often, it was simply enough to just stand in one place and trace the flight of those tiny insects as their distinctive green glow painted the night time sky.

These days, Summer has very little appeal to me other than as an opportunity to earn enough money to get through Winter. We work 7 days a week here at “Blast” and often until nine o’clock or later. But, the other night, I was standing in my back yard and noticed a few lightning bugs flitting about. For a brief moment, I was eight years old again and Summertime was magical. Had one ventured close enough, I probably would have captured it. Of course, eventually I would have had to let  it go much in the manner that I had to let go of my childhood. Fortunately, that night I learned that fireflies and childhood are two things I may always recapture, if only very briefly.

This guy is much more impressive at night

Sky Pilot

I recently blogged about how nice it is to see some things remain unchanged. We just got in a whole assortment of the Guillows balsa wood gliders and propeller powered planes.

As far as I can tell, these haven’t changed one single bit. We sell about a hundred every summer to young and old alike. The utter simplicity of this toy is genius. I loved flying these as a kid, but I always and I repeat always, made the same two mistakes. As I recall, I wasn’t a particularly stupid child, but despite the fact we lived next to a giant open field, I always managed to get my glider stuck in a tree in our back yard. My other perpetual tactical error involved the rubber band powered propeller models. I figured if I wound the prop up really tight that thing would stay up in the air for at least a half hour.

Alas, rather than a trans oceanic flight, I usually ended up with a snapped rubber band or worse yet, a shattered airplane. Those who fail to learn from history are destined to repeat it. My flight failures may have been the first of my life long attempts to continuously repeat the same failures hoping for a better result. Let’s see. I have tried to earn a living at retail for over thirty years now and have tried to break into the comic book industry as a writer for the same amount of time. Neither has proved to be overly successful, but on whole, I guess it has not been the abject failure of my crushed airplane.

Just like some toys, stubbornness will never go out of style. At least, it won’t for me.

I’m Board

At least you can pretend to be a 1%er

Yes,  I know the word “board” is supposed to be spelled “bored”, but that is my little play on words for today since I am about to discuss board games. Aren’t I clever?

It has been cold and rainy here in the Northeast for the past couple of days and I can’t help but think back(honestly, If you haven’t noticed, I can’t help but think back no matter the current situation)to those rainy days as a child when we would get a board game out of the closet and pass the time. Monopoly and Parcheesi were popular at our house. I’m not sure why we enjoyed Monopoly, being that the theme was the acquisition of real estate, something about which we, as kids, knew very little. Yet, the tension was quite palpable as we awaited the roll of the dice and hoped to land on Boardwalk or Park Place before one of our competitors seized up these prime properties. Thankfully, the go to jail card was the closest any of us got to the real thing.

Looking at today’s landscape of  video games and sophisticated technology, one would probably surmise that board games did not survive the digital onslaught. Quite the contrary. Here at Blast From The Past we have noticed an increase in the sale of classic board games. Perhaps we are the beneficiaries of rainy summer days and families needing an antidote to the rainy day blahs, but I think nationally board games are doing well. Whatever the reason, it is great to see something remain so popular and so unchanged. I’ll tell you, nothing is more amusing than hearing a fifty something woman squeal like a teen aged girl when she sees the “mystery date” game sitting on our shelf. However, today the date that was deemed the dud would be today’s dream date. I think someone should bring back the comb.

If it could walk “up” stairs…

Slinky – Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.

Just got in some slinky toys at Blast From The Past. They are packaged in an original style box. I had several when I was a kid. As I recall, I would spend ten minutes playing with this metal spring toy and about three weeks trying to untangle it after it would mysteriously hook itself together.

I had always chalked up its success to the massive t.v. advertising campaign and the catchy jingle, but I  just learned that the toy debuted in 1945 before television. Darned if I know how they sold a spring to millions of people as a kid’s toy without the power of television. I can only imagine that the inventor’s presentation to the toy company executives must of been way better than the guy who tried to sell them the piece of wood.

What walks down stairs, alone or in pairs, and makes a slinkity sound?
A spring, a spring, a marvelous thing! Everyone knows it’s Slinky.
It’s Slinky, it’s Slinky. For fun it’s a wonderful toy.
It’s Slinky, it’s Slinky. It’s fun for a girl or a boy.
It’s fun for a girl or boy!”

Close Shave

Good Clean Fun

Just got this Mr. Bubble Shaving kit into the store the other day and it really made me smile. Was there ever a kid that didn’t watch their dad shaving and want to give it a try? I remember my dad taking the blade out of his safety razor and smothering my face with shaving cream and letting me pretend shave. I don’t know what it is about wanting to copy your father when you are little, but whatever it was he did you wanted to try it. I wasn’t a big fan of the cigar puff I took when I was eight, however.

I suppose it is the same for moms and daughters, but I’m not really sure. Did little girls pretend shave their legs?

The Grass Is Always Greener…

I was mowing my lawn this morning and remembering how much I hated yard work as a teen. I don’t mind it so much, now. I guess it’s a little different when it is your own yard. Being outside in the fresh air for a couple hours before I head to work helps relax me.

Of course, I had an older brother and he was put in charge of lawn mowing first. That gave me a couple of  extra years off. I guess when your dad first tells you to start cutting the grass it is a sign that you are getting older, but the first indicator that you are growing up is when you see the lawn needs mowing and do it without being asked. That’s what being an adult is all about, seeing what needs to be done and doing it.

I don’t know why I took the initiative to do yard work without any prompting. It went against my naturally lazy instincts. I wasn’t perfect, however. My mom could never convince me to clean my room. Looking back, I realize that I should have been more cooperative, but I now make it a point to still have a messy room. I feel it would be downright insulting to my mother if I cleaned my room for my wife, but wouldn’t do it for her. I am very considerate that way.

But seriously, I have come to appreciate just how much my parents did for me and the fact that I could never repay them no matter how hard I tried. Come to think of it, My parents’ lawn needs mowing.  I think I’ll let my older brother have the honors. I wouldn’t want to upset the natural order, after all.

Heavy Metal

Beware The Robots

Okay, so this blog isn’t really about heavy metal, but pressed tin lithography probably wouldn’t have grabbed your attention. The tin toys pictured above are brand new and something we have carried at Blast From The Past over the years. They are not huge sellers, but we always find people that enjoy collecting them.

Though they are technically reproductions, they are one of the most faithful to the original items  that we sell. The toys are nearly identical to the originals from the 50’s and 60’s and even the boxes look like they came right out of the past. Many of them are simple wind ups, but my favorites are the battery powered versions. Those walk, blink, spin and fire machine guns. You can easily build your own intergalactic army.

I was not fully aware of how exacting the detail was until my wife and I saw a display of original tin toys at Epcot a couple years ago. The Japanese pavilion at a massive tin toy exhibit on loan from the world’s largest private collection. We were constantly pointing out the toys we either had or have had in inventory.

Strangely enough, as popular as these types of toys once were, I only have one vague memory of a toy robot in our house. I recall my older brother getting a battery operated robot for one of his birthdays, but I have no further recollection of it. No memory of seeing it around the house or ever playing with it. Perhaps, that was part of their master plan. These enemy robots have been infiltrating our homes for years, but they have used powerful hypnosis rays to make us forget while they await the day their conquest begins.

Well, I gotta go. I have to take the batteries out of some robots.

Dandy The Lion Irwin Remco Ideal Marx | eBay

Dandy The Lion Irwin Remco Ideal Marx | eBay.

Now on ebay. My absolute favorite toy as a child. Dandy The Lion was this awesome battery operated lion that would walk and if you struck his chin with the whip he would sit up and roar. Unfortunately my cousin kicked and broke it one day and that was the end. We still have a picture of me standing next to him when I was four.

I wish that everyone could have a memory of their absolute favorite toy from their childhood. It’s kind of a nice feeling. Hey, you know what would be a really nice feeling? If someone reading my blog decided to purchase dandy The Lion for me. It’s only $595.00 and it comes in the box. Any takers? I didn’t think so.

Sunshine Superman

I was watching the 2012 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony the other night. It was nice to see Donovan get inducted and perform. His song “Sunshine Superman” always struck me as odd because of the lyric Superman or Green Lantern ain’t got a-nothin’ on me. It was not surprising to see Superman referenced, because by 19666 when the song was released he was as iconic as any character in any medium, but Green Lantern still seemed rather obscure.

There were several other inductees from the 1950’s and 60’s, but I really aged quickly when The Beastie Boys, Guns and Roses and Red Hot Chili Peppers were all inducted. These are current bands, right? They only started making music a few years…uh, geez I just checked, it’s been over 25 years. Damn, I’m old.

I guess Justin Bieber should be inducted any day now.

Milk Isn’t Supposed To Rattle

I just finished putting out some new metal lunch boxes at Blast From The Past. They are one of our best selling categories. We sell them to collectors and to kids that still use them to bring their lunch to school. They no longer come with the thermos, however. That’s probably a good thing. How well I remember the tell tale sound of the broken glass liner after dropping my thermos. Since we did not have a cafeteria when I was in grade school, everyone brought their lunch. Metal lunch boxes were quite popular and most were based upon some cartoon or television program, except mine. I had the boring black and red plaid model. I’m guessing the lunch box with Batman on it probably cost a dollar more.

My wife still has her original lunch box and thermos from when she was in school. Her lunch box was images of street signs. How lame is that? Oh, right, plaid lunch box. Darn!
